The program provides a legal guarantee for one hundred days of occupation in every financial year to mature associates of any rural family willing to do public work.

The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), was notified on September 7, 2005.

OBJECTIVE OF THE ACT:

The objective of the Act is to enhance livelihood security in rural areas by providing at least 100 days of guaranteed wage employment in a financial year to every household whose adult members volunteer to do unskilled manual work.

Effectively implemented, MGNREGA has the potential to transform the geography of poverty.

Previous story: Ketugram–II Development Block is treated as a flood affected area. It is affected by floods every year during the monsoon season. The river Ajay caused flood this year too. Once upon a time it was thought that a bandh/embankment/berm is required to protect the block area. The zamindars of that time constructed an earthen bandh along the rivers banks for protection of inhabitants of Ketugram–II Development Block. The development of the bandh has increased as time goes on. The ex-zamindari bandh is now developed under the MGNREGA scheme, every year. It's mandatory to keep the bandh well and healthy as it could break due to a number of reasons including heavy rainfall or heavy water pressure from Ajay river and cause major devastation.

Benefit from the scheme: Before the construction of the bandh, the crops were affected by the flood during monsoon every year. Many people were homeless and huge areas of cultivation were affected by the flood but after the construction of the bandh, the inhabitants of this area have benefited and their cultivated land has increased in production. The farmers are also cultivating their land during the monsoon season, when Ajay river flows in full capacity. On the other hand, the bandh is used as a village internal road. It connects the villages Charkhi and Billeswar.

Future planning: The Gram Panchayat will take some schemes under MGNREGA for improvement, widening, rising and pitching of the bandh to protect from the annual floods and also serve as a mode of transportation for the people.
